Beyond The Seahttp://silverscreen.thinkbrunei.com Alonehttp://silverscreen.thinkbrunei.com Ocean's Thirteenhttp://silverscreen.thinkbrunei.com May 12 Silver ScreenAs of right now, I will not be doing any more movie reviews in this blog. I have a proper blog for it and that looks more professional. plus it is for a good cause. http://silverscreen.thinkbrunei.com more on thinkbrunei.com will follow suit. May 06 Spider-Man 3The Silver Screen, in my o-so-not humble opinion: Spider-Man (rating out of a perfect 10 --- 6.9) Too much stuff cramped into this third instalment. Issues with Sandman, Venom, Eddie Brock, Gwen Stacy, Mary Jane, Goblin, Harry, and ultimately himself. It's information overload. Two and a half hours is already too long and it's still not enough. Gwen Stacy's storyline was disappointing. What a lame excuse to bring her in into the picture although Bryce Dallas Howard did a great job with it. Eddie Brock, Flint Marko and Harry Osborn were great though - great acting by everyone. The Venom storyline was the best but it didn't shine through the rest. And why is Peter Parker revealing himself to all his enemies? The worst part of the movie was how Harry found out it wasn't Spider-Man that killed his father. That and watching Peter getting jiggy with it along the streets of NY. The best part was the city flight-fight scenes and the CGI was very good too. May 05 Top 4Simon predicted it. And usually he's correct. I'm beginning to wonder if he knows the voting results. I didn't think Phil would actually make it this far. But his rendition of Blaze Of Glory was the only song that night that did Bon Jovi justice. In an ideal world, he should have the top votes this week. My illegal upload on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbuIDpE24TY And as much as I want to see Jordin in the top 2, she was the worst of all during rock night. So, again in an ideal world, she should be the one going home too. But the second one was Chris Richardson, who I thought did well this week. Not surprised though as his fan base just isn't as big as the Top 4. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nIWvO_HirPc May 04 Pan's LabyrinthDVD version, either cant or didnt catch it in cinema. Keep in mind the experience is lesser on DVD. But sometimes that made the movie better... What a wonderfully dark, dark fantasy. So intriguing, so much better than a lot of the Hollywood fantasy stories. It was beautifully made, a beautiful story, and very dark for a movie with a lead as young as the protagonist is. It is, however, rated R for violence. This, if compared to the previous few Hollywood fantasy movies like Eragon and Narnia, was so much, so much better. i only wished the three tasks were not just three but five or more. Those were the best parts because the 'real life' plots were sometimes a bit boring. The GroomsmenDVD version, either cant or didnt catch it in cinema. Keep in mind the
experience is lesser on DVD. But sometimes that made the movie
better... The Groomsmen (rating out of a perfect 10 --- 5.2) A typical Ed Burns film, me thinks. When he's got a story to tell, he tells it quite well. But it's just not something to be jumping up and down for. And I thought he could have been more convincing in his acting. But it does portray a good mix of lives of the bunch of guys in his story. And it had a nice cast. May 02 Children Of MenDVD version, either cant or didnt catch it in cinema. Keep in mind the
experience is lesser on DVD. But sometimes that made the movie
better... Children Of Men (rating out of a perfect 10 --- 6.2) Julianne Moore had only what, 3 scenes in this movie? That was a bit disappointing. Set in the future, where Earth and human kind were close to extinction, that contained a very interesting concept in itself. it was gripping at times but doesn't grip enough. probably because I watched on a television screen and this kind of movie really needs to be appreciated on the big screen. There was a very good action scene when they were all in the car being chased by a mob of people. But the way it ended also was lacking. Too easy when all she had to say was 'we're safe now' or something along that line. After This Our ExileDVD version, either cant or didnt catch it in cinema. Keep in mind the
experience is lesser on DVD. But sometimes that made the movie
better... After This Our Exile (rating out of a perfect 10 --- 5.2) Aaron Kwok is a lucky bastard. How did he get so lucky. It was funny to hear some of the Malaysian slangs used in this movie as it tells a story set in West Malaysia. I didn't think any of the acting was commendable. I have to also mention that Charlie Yeung's acting hasn't improved at all. I don't quite remember if she was any good before she 'retired' but ever since she came back, nothing impressed me. It was a good story to tell, just the way it was told wasn't impressive enough. I didn't understand why Kelly Lin had to be there but there was a scene steamy enough that I doubt anyone would complain. Little Miss SunshineDVD version, either cant or didnt catch it in cinema. Keep in mind the
experience is lesser on DVD. But sometimes that made the movie
better... Little Miss Sunshine (rating out of a perfect 10 --- 7.1) This got me hooked right off the bat and I could tell I was going to enjoy it. It's humour is great. It's really funny. Great characters with differences that all come together as the movie builds up. I am wondering though if the little girl's tummy is real cos it's kinda big for her age. The only unsatisfying part was the way it ended and the director and writer admitted they had that problem of closing it off too with the numerous alternate endings but none of them were any better. April 24 AmelieDVD version, either cant or didnt catch it in cinema. Keep in mind the experience is lesser on DVD. But sometimes that made the movie better... in the end, for me, nothing's gained. i just don't see how this movie can be uplifting. i was even annoyed many a time. however, i have a feeling my rating would be a little higher if i had watched it on the big screen rather than half awake on a sunday morning in bed. April 20 TMNTThe Silver Screen, in my o-so-not humble opinion: TMNT (rating out of a perfect 10 --- 5.8) The CGI was ok, not too shabby, especially the best part of the movie during the showdown between Leo and Raph. but the overall story progression was poor. Everything fell into place too easily, as if the target audience is just the kids. We, those who grew up during the 80s, are the target audience and we are adults now, with more intelligence and expectations than what we've been given. April 16 SunshineThe Silver Screen, in my o-so-not humble opinion: Sunshine (rating out of a perfect 10 --- 5.4) This is one confusing sci-fi flick. confusing because the way the director shot it during certain parts. sure i can accept that an anomaly went on board. but not once did we get a chance to see its face and i really dont know why. and while the anomaly was seen in one room with one of the crew, next when Cillian Murphy met up with them both they are somehow in another part of the ship, and that crew member still alive while the others died instantly. why??? the first half was enjoyable, right till the anomaly came on board without clear explanations why it is still alive, suddenly rambling about God and not drilling holes into Cillian Murphy when it had the chance. really really bad. there should have been more focus there but the second half was just really confusing. |
